Maya Martin Cadogan, PAVE
Maya Martin Cadogan is driven by the knowledge that when parents are empowered to raise their voices, good things happen in education. That’s why she founded Parents Amplifying Voices in Education (PAVE) in her hometown of Washington, DC some four years ago. In that time, PAVE parents have successfully advocated for tens of millions of dollars in more resources for students who need them the most and much, much more.
In early 2020, PAVE parents told Maya and her team that the upcoming election was too important for them to sit on the sidelines: they wanted to engage. With Maya and her team’s support, PAVE parents secured commitments from nearly 1500 voters to #Vote4DC kids. Among these commitments, PAVE was able to nearly double the citywide turnout rate, ensuring these largely Black and Brown education voters had a real impact on ward and Districtwide races.

“PAVE’s parent leaders raise their voices because they know that educating a child takes a village and they are passionate advocates for equity and justice. We’ve seen that when parents lead — and their voices are respected — they expand the conversation and create collaborative solutions to the complex problems our schools and education system face. And parents want everyone to be at the table together, so that we can all figure out what we need to do for our kids.”
